While you´re in San Sebastian, don´t miss the opportunity to go sailing in the Bay of Biscay. It’s yet another way to get a special point of view on the Basque landscape.Sailing, snorkel  and lunch in Getaria. Getaria is a charming fishing village where you can enjoy fresh-caught fish right at the port accompanied by the local white wine called txakoli. It is wedged between two beautiful beaches and also has a little islet that makes it for a nice hike. Moreover, it is the birth town of the famous fashion designer Balenciaga and you can visit the museum devoted to him.

    The Basques and the Sea

The Basque people have always had a close relationship with the sea, where they harvested important resources and built an economy on products like whale oil and salt cod. It’s said that Basque sailors, when following their catch, were the first to arrive to the Americas, landing in Newfoundland, present-day Canada. One of our most illustrious sailors, Juan Sebastián Elkano, was the first person to circumnavigate the globe on the “nao Victoria” (1519-1522).

  • Day 3-San Sebastian- Hiking Mt Ernio and Picnic

Hike up to 1075 metres(3300 feet) above sea level for the best views of the area.

Reach the summit of Mount Ernio for the best views in the area and spend the afternoon exploring the coastal cliffs and villages

Walking time: 2 hours up, 1,15 hours down with multiple stops along the way for pictures, snacks, rest etc. Time for Picnic in a beatiful green area. The Country-style lunch is based in fresh French baguettes with artisanal cheese and locally cured charcuterie & fresh fruit. A fine bottle of Rioja wine completes the deal.

    MOUNT ERNIO (1075m)

Across the Northern slopes of Ernio, there are forests of Beeches and Oaks. Between the stones of Ernio, a moon milk river flows, the only one of the world. It is, in fact, formed by a strange substance that nature pours off in solid state and underground Ernio, filters off in liquid state.  This river was discovered years ago by a scientific society but its exact location/source is still secret to prevent its exploitation. (2 hours up, 1:15 hours down)

Just before arriving to the coastal town of Zumaia, we will stop and walk through a very easy path for aprox. 20 minutes to discover an amazing place! At this point of the coast, the mountains drop abruptly to sea level, letting us observe the rough rock formations in real detail. THE CHARMING SMALL FISHING VILLAGE OF GETARIA Home of Juan Sebastian Elcano (Getaria 1487-1526) the man who first sailed around the world.

It is probably one of the best kept medieval centers which best reflects the passing of time. The quality of the buildings, its urban harmony and other factors make Getaria a privileged place in the geography of Gipuzkoa.
