Human civilization has demonstrated its ingenuity in transforming foodstuffs to make them more suitable or pleasant to consume. Spain is divided into 19 autonomous communities, 15 on the mainland, the Balearic and Canary Islands, and two little-known ones bordering Morocco (Ceuta and Melilla).
The wine knows no frontiers nor geographical nor political boundaries established by man, so the wine regions are classified by “denominaciones de origen” abbreviated to DO, which is a prestigious classification awarded to wines which meet the stringent quality and production standards of he designated region. DO labels serve as a guarantee of quality.
The main wine regions of Spain are: la Rioja and south of Basque Country and Priorat in Catalonia as DOCs (qualified appellation of origin), Ribera del Duero (Castilla y León), Sherry (Andalusia), Rias Baixas ( Galicia), and Penedés (Catalonia).
